The storylines and plot centred on the experiences of an expeditionary group of alien beings, who have come to earth to study human ways. In order to 'blend in' they decide to pose as an 'ordinary' human family living among the inhabitants of Rutherford, Ohio - a fictional location.

Third Rock from the Sun (aka ;3rd Rock) featured the talents of John Lithgow in the role of Dick Solomon, Kristen Johnston as second-in-command Sally with Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Tommy (the Information Officer) and French Stewart as Harry, the guy with the giant transmitter in his head.

Other leading roles devolved to actresses Jane Curtin, Simbi Khali and Elmarie Wendel. Actor Wayne Knight was initially introduced as a recurring character but emerged a series regular by the end of its run.
